Trump and the ‘very unfair’ US constitution: Satire fails when reality keeps pace

Someone somewhere wrote a wonderful line the other day: “satirists, after all, are flummoxed by Trump because he’s a caricature himself”.

Which brings me to Andy Borowitz’s side-splittingly funny account of President Donald Trump’s unhappiness with the US Constitution. If you haven’t read it, click on it here. Doesn’t matter whether you support Donald Trump or not, it’s just a funny piece of writing.

But here’s the chilling bit of the alternative facts imagined by Mr Borowitz. They might easily not be alternative at all. President Trump may really be thinking that it’s “very unfair” that he, the elected president, should be unable to do all the things he wants because of a 1787 document for which Americans have the very highest regard.

As Mr Borowitz writes:

“’If the Constitution prevented me from doing one or two things, I’d chalk that up to bad luck,’ he said. ‘But when literally everything I want to do is magically a violation of the Constitution, that’s very unfair and bad treatment’.”

And again:

“Lashing out at the document’s authors, Trump said that ‘America is a great country, but we have maybe the worst constitution writers in the world’.”

And yet again:

“’Russia has much better constitution writers than we do,’ he said. ‘I talked to Putin, and he said their constitution never gives him problems’.”

President Trump really is a caricature of himself.
