Lettuce think of Liz Truss

How to gauge the mood in the country about Britain’s prime minister Liz Truss? By talking to MPs belonging to her Conservative Party? By listening to the political pundits? By reading the tea leaves? As it turns out, the best way may be to study the ‘Daily Star’ tabloid’s live video feed ‘Truss or Lettuce’.

Featuring a portrait of the British prime minister and a head of lettuce, the paper calls it the “lettuce-cam” and says reader can watch “our 60p Tesco lettuce battling Liz Truss to see who will last the longest”.

As a sidebar, please note that Harry Cole and James Heale’s biography of Liz Truss will be out in just over 50 days. Many are asking if  she will be out of 10 Downing Street before the book?

Anyway, back to the ‘Daily Star’s’ lettuce challenge. The imaginative and highly creative face-off between a vegetable and Ms Truss is supposed to address the question: Can Liz Truss outlast this lettuce, which is to say, will she go more than 35 days in office, starting October 14.

Political writers have been having a bit of fun with this. Someone at Bloomberg suggested a further question. Might that lettuce might make a better PM than Liz Truss? Possibly, the writer concluded, listing three hilarious metrics.

Unlike Ms Truss, the lettuce is a rich source of vitamin K and water; doesn’t push unfunded tax cuts and wreck the British pound and adds a pleasant crunchy mouthfeel to dishes. However, the contest could be a draw in terms of “oratorical brilliance, human empathy, organizational skills or popularity” and whether King Charles says “Dear oh dear” when he sees lettuce, just as he did with Ms Truss.

The lettuce may, ultimately lose the longevity battle to Ms Truss, however because her party is still working out how to replace her.

Lettuce pray.
