The Big Story:
The annual gathering at Davos of political and business leaders comes round with the revival of contested concepts from a bygone age — mercantilism rather than free trade and territorial aggression rather than peaceful coexistence.
The theme of this year’s World Economic Forum, as Davos is formally called, is ‘A Spirit of Dialogue’. But many fear it could be reduced to a monologue, or even a lecture.
Donald Trump arrives in Davos trailed by the largest American delegation ever to descend on the Alpine retreat. The US worldview is expected to be in focus at Davos, with Trump upending trade rules, withdrawing the US from key international organisations, kidnapping Venezuela’s president and threatening to annex Greenland.
Our first book looks ahead to Trump’s visit:
“This year, he would return, in person, when for the first time in Davos history, distrust of America was near total.”
This Week’s Books:
- A trio of thrillers by a Davos insider.
- A plea for economic sense and sensibility, 180 years on.
