The Palestinian question: Gideon Levy speaks truth to power over and over

wh_arab_israeli_conflictThis is a good time to re-read Johann Hari’s interview with Israeli journalist Gideon Levy. It originally appeared in The Independent almost exactly four years ago but it remains relevant in this brief calm before the next storm inevitably breaks and the Israelis and Palestinians are at it again.

How can it be otherwise when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu continues to defend his country’s conduct of the fighting as “justified” and “proportional”? When, as Mr Levy pointed out back then, Israel continues with the narrative “…that we Israelis are the ultimate and only victims. That the Palestinians are born to kill, and their hatred is irrational. That the Palestinians are not human beings like us…”

When, as Mr Levy said of the situation in 2010, “fake” talks are underway. These, he said, “are worse than no talks at all (because) if there are negotiations, there won’t be international pressure. Quiet, we’re in discussions, settlement can go on uninterrupted. That is why futile negotiations are dangerous negotiations. Under the cover of such talks, the chances for peace will grow even dimmer… “
