Donald Trump continues to say he wants to annex Greenland, a territory of Denmark.

If it came to pass, this would be a free ranging assault on the sovereignty of European nations and the principles of international law, which have been observed for 80 years.

But now, the US president also seems to want Europe’s breakfast egg – scrambled, boiled, poached, fried easy over…whatever.

Apparently, the US government has reached out to European producers for help with bringing down America’s soaring egg prices. The worst bird flu outbreak in US history has wiped out more than 166 million birds since 2022, spread to dairy cattle in 17 states, crumbled shell into its egg supplies and really got the price of eggs cooking.

In desperation, the US filed a request at the German Egg Association, according to a spokesperson for the organisation. But Germany was able to offer only scant relief because it is partly dependent on egg imports itself. That said, Germany does, at least, have enough for itself for Easter.

Incoming chancellor Friedrich Merz must incline to a fried egg smile – two yolks for eyes.
