Emmylou Harris isn’t really saying good bye to Europe, just yet

On Sunday night (May 17), we were at the Emmylou Harris concert at the Royal Albert Hall, as part of the fourth instalment of the Highways Festival.

This was Emmylou’s European Farewell Tour as one of country music’s most celebrated stars hangs up her guitar after 50 years.

Next year, Emmylou turns 80. At 79 itself, she told the packed hall in mock exasperation, “I can’t remember anything”.

And yet, she sang 23 songs over the course of 90 minutes without an autocue or so much as a sheet of paper with the playlist (or some of the lines)!

It was a remarkable performance by a singer who’s won 14 Grammys, performed with everyone who’s anyone – Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstad, to name a few.

At the end of the Royal Albert Hall concert though, here’s the good news. It wasn’t Emmylou’s final goodbye to Britain or indeed to Europe. She’s scheduled to return in late August for the Long Road Festival in Leicestershire, after which she will play four venues in Europe.
