The Big Story:

Youth protests, which have rattled the powers that be in India and France, show Gen Z to be willing to take a stand. This is the IRL or in real life version of young people in 2026:

  • The leaders of India’s protests against sweeping revisions to voter rolls have invoked high ideals, not least Mahatma Gandhi and his philosophy of non-violent resistance.
  • In France, sociologist Fabien Truong has praised the “maturity and coherence” of the teenagers protesting against decrepit schools and suchlike, as well as the “beautiful” social media “solidarity” shown by students in wealthier areas with their poorer counterparts.

This Week’s Books:

  • Ernest Hemingway’s defining portrait about the young in 1926.
  • The A to Z of civil resistance.
